Episode 28: Perseverance Talking Points
Talking truth about "self-improvement" as it relates to health, overall wellness, and expressing the truest version of you. This is Marta Mrotek with Something Honest…..
I’ve spent a lot of my life waiting. Waiting for something to happen or for something to change. And that’s most difficult when we’re in the middle of something painful and it feels like what we want might never show up. And honestly, I’ve done my share of giving up and giving in. Mostly because the waiting felt too hard, and doing anything to make something real happen felt even harder.. We’ve talked about this before.. Getting what you really want might take some time. It might take some patience. But you don’t have to sit there waiting. There is something you can do right now to make something happen and a way to make something real.
From here on out, for the next nine full episodes, all the way until we finish working our way through the principles and make our way to the end of this first season, everything that we’re going to talk about leads to the physical manifestation of whatever it is that you want to see showing up in all kinds of tangible ways, in your everyday physical experience. This is where we really start putting everything together and making a difference in your everyday life.
The principle of Perseverance focuses primarily on the value of continued daily practice, and specifically, at least in part, as taking a daily inventory. And that’s a habit that will go a long way to getting what we want all by itself. But it also has a lot to do with creating all kinds of new habits and the many benefits of ongoing practice in relationship to any part of your life that might need changing. By now, we know that it really isn’t usually what we do just once that makes a difference. And, even though every once in a while it can, MOST of the time it’s what we do over and over again that brings meaningful change. Most things worth having don’t come without some amount of effort, and many of those things will require a process with some sort of sustainable method or program that you know you can turn into a practice that you can repeat over time.
So today all of the talking points relate in some way to creating a sustainable practice…
TALKING POINT 1: FREEWILL
As with all things, it’s best if we start at the beginning. And since we’ve already talked about Willingness, and the idea that you can’t really be dragged into any of this, and that you really do have to be ready for whatever it is that you’d like to make, we won’t have to go all that deep here. But it is worth repeating, and certainly part of this process, to acknowledge the importance of freewill. Hopefully, by now, you do know what you want, and you are in fact ready and willing to start doing whatever it takes to get it. We know that complacency and procrastination can be deeply ingrained, and at this point, we have taken responsibility for all of the ways that we may have been wasting our own time and energy.
I know I date myself by quoting 80’s song lyrics here, and it might fly over the heads of all the younglings out there, but freewill, which by the way you do always have to some extent, even when it might not feel like it, says that, even if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. And a big part of choosing and following a clear path requires that you exercise your free will effectively on a regular basis. So, if you really want this thing, whatever it is, you’ll have to make the choices that lead to it over and over again. That really is the definition of perseverance, and it’s why we started talking about patience when we were working on Discipline, and the idea that while self-discipline leads us to taking action, it also teaches us about when it’s time to refrain.
And sometimes, because of all of our filters and patterns, it’s hard to know what we’re really working on in any given moment. But making the time for some kind of daily inventory is one of the most powerful tools I know for being able to discern right action and to figure out what actually needs to be done right now… And we’ll talk more about exactly how you can make that part of what you do every day to stay on track in the Perseverance Study Journal Episode, but we already know that self-study is going to be an ongoing process. That’s something we’re never done with if we want to be self-aware. And creating a practice that includes some kind of regular sanity check not only keeps your conscience clear, and it is great for that, it frees you of all kinds of mental and emotional baggage, and keeps you moving in the right direction. Like, really knowing what to do AND what not to do. And both of those things take practice. Sometimes, refraining from action is actually the more difficult thing. It can be really hard to break some of those bad habits that we already have, and certainly this applies to any kind of unhealthy behavior or addiction. So we already know that sometimes stopping is what’s hard. But we also know that sometimes the hard part is in fact taking right action, doing something that’s meaningful and doing it with intention, that takes a lot of practice too… And knowing what to do and actually getting up and doing it can be especially difficult when you’re scared or feeling stuck. And that doesn’t necessarily point to any kind of laziness. It has more to do with finding courage, and willingness, and being ready and exercising your free will on a regular basis. Sometimes it’s just really hard to find the motivation we need to start moving in the right direction and that’s Talking Point Number Two, Motivation.
TALKING POINT 2: MOTIVATION
So, if you’ve been listening along and working your way through everything that we did with the Principle of Discipline, you already know that taking those first steps to make something happen will take some real focus. It may have taken some soul-searching and a fair amount of planning to get to this point. But it is easy to get caught in the planning phase. Most of us are pretty good at that part. We buy all the books and all of the things that we think will help us feel better or help us start making something new and then we let them sit. We may or may not read those books or try out this new thing, and we might find a brief spark of energy that leads us to play with our new toys or try out this new method. But so often it just doesn’t last. It’s pretty common for us to have dreams and plans that just kind of fall away before we ever even really do anything meaningful to bring them to life.
I know that has been the case for me. All that stuff from the intro about giving up and giving in…? I’m guilty of it. So often, if I can’t have important things the way I really want them, and especially if I feel like I can’t have what I need, or if I can’t see a way to do something the way I feel like I should, I can just decide that I don’t want it all. And that can be with little things, but sometimes it’s with really big things too. Because sometimes I can’t find anything that feels real to hold on to during the waiting part, and I can get lost in feeling hopeless and helpless and start believing that things will never really change... And when that happens, my natural response is to push it down and sometimes push it away completely so that I can just stop thinking about it. I’ve definitely admitted to that before. One of my main challenges in life has been to face what’s hard and especially what’s truly painful and really look at it and see what’s mine to change. And that can be hard when you know that it really might take some time for any of it to get better. So how do you get motivated when you’re in the middle of something really difficult, or really painful, or something that feels scary or like it’s never going to change? How do you keep yourself from settling for things the way they are when you feel stuck and it’s hard to see any clear path to getting what you want?
I know it’s not easy. I know because it hasn’t always been easy for me. I know how that feels. We get caught up in those patterns and cycles and they just feel so hard to break. We can start feeling like there really is nothing that can be done… almost like we have no choice. So, we settle. We settle for a state of mind or a state of being that we don’t want. We settle for jobs, and bodies, and relationships, environments and all kinds of circumstances that we really don’t want. And so often we just can’t find the motivation to start moving toward something better until something really big happens. Sometimes something really good, but for me, usually it’s when something really awful happens.
Because you know that whole hitting rock bottom thing is real. For me, it’s almost always been something more painful than what I’ve already got that finally wakes me up. Probably because I do a pretty good job of ignoring the things that hurt and kind of numbing out. And all those little signs from the universe are so much harder to recognize when you’re shut down. But there are some things that you can’t just ignore.. Again, for me, loss, the death of a loved one, or at least the fear of death or loss, is a good example. I’ve lost a lot of people that I love, lots of different ways, and no matter how they went a lot of the pain there was because they were so suddenly gone, you know? How could they possibly be here one minute and gone the next? And the older I get the stronger that reminder that anything could disappear like that hits even harder. Anyone could be suddenly gone… And I could be here one minute and gone the next! How long exactly do I have to do what I really want to do? How long do I plan to wait? And if I’m not going to do anything to make a change right now, if I’m not willing to do it now… then when?! And even though all of that can be really scary and really painful, there is a gift that goes along with coming to terms with that shocking, unexpected wakeup call that can come in the middle of grief.. And that’s a sense of urgency to get busy living.
Knowing that getting what I want might take some time, but that being who I want to be and moving in the right direction toward what I want needs to start right now. As the years roll by, for me, that one thing motivates me like nothing else. I don’t care how old you are; we have agreed that the time for everything is now. And of course, that doesn’t mean that we aren’t thoughtful; we’re not impulsively flying in random directions. We can think it through and study ourselves to find a clear path… But we don’t have to wait for something awful to happen… we don’t. If we really do have freewill, and we do, there’s always a choice, isn’t there? We don’t have to wait; now can be the time to make something real. And once we find that motivation, we will start seeing progress… no matter how small, we know that something will happen. And I hope you know that if you look for it, it’s there. And seeing that small amount of progress is what creates momentum… and that’s Talking Point number three..
TALKING POINT 3: MOMENTUM
Moving into action takes some determination, and there is almost always some hard work involved, and we have finally accepted the fact that it might take some time to see the big, really obvious changes in the physical experience. But it is almost certain that you will see at least some immediate results. And yes, they might be small at first because there are so many things that don’t show up all big or all at once, but even the smallest amount of progress proves that what you’re doing is, in fact, working. And because it takes a while for some of it to really flesh out and make a big change in what your life looks like, you’ll probably have to be really vigilant about affirming all of those little things and how they’re leading you in the right direction if you want to create some momentum.
That’s the truth when it comes to momentum. It takes some time for it to build. And this whole idea of building on what you’ve already got and growing the right kind of energy for what you want really comes into play here… and so much of that has to do with going back to gratitude. We talked about this a lot in the Surrender episodes, and again, just a quick reminder that what we’re doing here really is all about putting it all together, making a habit of doing everything that we’ve been doing here so far.. And if you’ve been doing this work consistently, you can most likely feel some momentum building already. If you can look at where you are right now and find something to be grateful for you’re already working toward making something better or making something new. And even if you haven’t seen any great big changes in your life just yet.. You can probably feel them coming. Remember, gratitude is a really powerful tool for not just changing how you see things, but for appreciating what you’ve got, and everything that you’ve already done, and using it to change the way that you feel moving forward.
And in the beginning, since you may not be able to actually see most of what’s happening with your eyes just yet, progress is mostly measured by how you feel. And some of those good feeling things are emotions can come from being grateful. Maybe something as simple as the gratitude that comes from knowing that you’re finally doing something to make a change for the better and the satisfaction that comes from completing even small daily tasks. Or maybe sometimes it comes from something that really didn’t take all that much time or that much effort, but you did get to see some immediate results or improvement. And, you know, if that’s what's happening, that’s great. But once again, the emotions that come up from daily practice aren’t always the warm and fuzzy kind. Some of what you feel can, in fact, seem like something negative. And this is where feelings of resistance or complacency step in. We have to be on the lookout for that when we’re working on growing the discipline required for ongoing practice and finding the energy to get up and do something that might not feel fun or something that feels hard. Sometimes it shows up as frustration or impatience in what we might see as a lack of progress, or that feeling that it’s taking too long and not wanting to wait for that thing that we really want. Sometimes it might even feel like it’s just not worth it or that it’s not working, and that leads to the big speech on looking for progress, not perfection… We can use those little bits of progress to keep building momentum when challenging emotions kick in. And we’ll talk about that more when we come back from the break.
We’ll be back in two minutes or less with more on the Principle of Perseverance and the challenge question for this week.
We’ve been talking about how to make something real and how the Principle of Perseverance leads to everything that you really want. We’ve made our way to Talking Point number four.
TALKING POINT 4: PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION
So there are quite a few ways that we can measure progress, and a lot of that depends on what we’re working on. I’ll go back briefly to my personal example from the Discipline Talking Points just to say that physical practice and specifically physical exercise that leads to building strength provides a really practical method for measuring progress. Usually, your goal for this kind of thing and the intentions that you’ve set around it have something to do with being healthier, or stronger, or changing the way you look in the mirror or the numbers on the scale. And while we do almost always have some kind of end goal for this kind of thing, hopefully you can see this as something that really is more about a lifestyle change. If you’re serious about it, there isn’t really an end goal, and this is just something that you’re going to do every day if you want it to last. And your results for this kind of really physical practice can be almost immediately measured at least to some degree, because you will almost immediately feel something different.
Even if feeling different means that you wore yourself out, or especially if you end up with some seriously sore muscles, you will know that you did something. And even if some of that feels in some way negative, you really can use it to feel good about moving in the right direction. It’s like, your proof, you know. And just real quick, it’s important to be careful right here and make sure that you don’t do what we so often do and on day 2 tell yourself, “This is too hard, I don’t want to do this tomorrow because it doesn’t feel good and I feel like I’m never going see results or to get where I want to be,” or on day 302 say, “I’ve been working really hard for a while now, and I feel pretty good about my results, and this is pretty close to where I want to be, so maybe I don’t need to do this tomorrow.” That’s not how you make something that lasts. But you can turn that around and use whatever is happening now, whether it’s something that feels challenging or something that feels fulfilling, as a way to get even more motivated and start building more momentum.
This idea of ongoing practice relates to everything, not just the exercise stuff, and not just the physical stuff. It applies to all the mental work that we need to do and everything that makes a spiritual connection. And it definitely plays a big part in all of the relationship stuff and all of the emotional stuff. So no matter what you’re working on, most of the gratification is going to come from the doing. Just knowing that you’re not making excuses anymore… No more procrastination. No more feeling like you’re just sitting around waiting. That’s not you anymore.. And knowing that you’re taking action toward what you want will change the way you feel. That’s really what makes you feel different right now. Just getting up and doing it every day, no matter what it is, and not giving up or giving in, no matter what happens or how it turns out, is what makes you stronger. And once we feel like it doesn’t have to be perfect, and realize that it might never be perfect, and that the progress, the progression of this thing, really has no end, we get more out of the time we spend in the process. And at some point, we can embrace the idea that in the middle of the process itself, we’re creating a healthy space for all of the living to happen. In the end, it’s all about the process; we’re always already in the middle of an ongoing process. And that’s your life, really. Whether we pay attention or not, we know that change is always coming, we know that everything is always moving and shifting.. Every second ticking by, in the middle of all the waiting, even when you feel like you’re stuck.. everything is always changing. And now you know, at least I hope you know, that the only thing you can really control is you.. And that doesn’t mean that you have to be perfect! It just means that you have to keep going. Just keep moving in the right direction… We just have to get intentional about the process… And use what we’ve learned to stay focused on who we want to be along the way, what we really want to make, and where we really want to go.
TALKING POINT 5: THE PROCESS
So this is the part where you might be saying, “Thanks, that’s all great, I’m all about progress, but you know, where’s my stuff? Like, when do I get it?” And I’m here to reassure you that all that stuff that you really want will come. But I think one of the hardest parts about this whole thing is figuring out that it might not all happen exactly when and how you want it.. And that when it gets here, it might not even look just how you thought it would. Part of the process and part of what happens in that time in between knowing what you want and actually having it includes the rearrangement of all the moving parts in the physical world around you. And that often includes what’s happening with other people and all kinds of stuff shifting around in all of your situations and circumstances. And you already know that you absolutely cannot control all of that stuff… You know that, right?... Hence the waiting… And we can get bummed out about that sometimes. That’s where we can get frustrated or scared and give up… But the chances of you getting what you want almost disappear entirely if you decide to give up now.
We’ve talked about it, it is true that every once in a while what you want comes quickly. Sometimes everything was already perfectly in place for it, and it can show up right away. But for most of us, most of the time, the part of this process that actually makes something real is perseverance. Taking every moment as it comes and being able to consistently reapply your energy and choose what you want over and over again, and PROVING it with your thoughts, emotions, and actions on a regular basis is what makes something happen.
And man, that is so easy for me to say, isn’t it?... Don’t think for a second that I don’t get that. I do! Go back to the intro, I agree… waiting is hard. And for me, I know it can be different for everybody, but for me personally, the actual doing, taking action on a regular basis, isn’t the hardest part. The hardest part for me is the mental and emotional stuff. The part of the process that I have to work on most is keeping my mind and energy focused and staying positive while the rest of the world makes space for what I really want… You’re attitude and all of the energy that you’re using to make something new depends on the strength of your mental game. And I have to work HARD to keep my mental game strong. I need tools for that! I need something to DO while I wait! And this idea of daily inventory is the best tool I know for this part of the process.
We’ll hammer out the details for how to do that in the next episode, but for right now, it’s all about the decision. Making the commitment. Knowing that you can, in fact, make it through any storm if you can just stay focused. Knowing that no matter how high the tide, even if you feel like you're sinking, even if the water feels freezing cold and learning to swim feels way too hard, you are not going to give up this time. This time, I’m not gonna run away from it. I’m not gonna push it down. I’m not gonna push it away or look away… I’m not gonna cover it up, and I’m not gonna try to kill it just because it’s scary or hard to see. This time it’s different. Even if it feels like everything is screaming that it’s all the same and it’s never going to change. It is different this time. Because I’m different. You are!! You’re different. You are already different because you’ve been doing the work. You’ve been building a method, you’ve been changing your mind and growing the energy, and if you can just stay with it, if you can be patient and stay connected to that good feeling energy, even when it feels hard, the good stuff will come.
So let’s talk about what it takes to create a sustainable practice and how that helps when the waiting feels too hard to do…
TALKING POINT 6: SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE
When I first started this podcast, I had been in a holding pattern for a long time. I’d been living on autopilot and not feeling much of what was happening around me. And to be honest, that was kind of working for me. It was… not feeling things is kind of okay with me for some reason. I’ve been studying myself for a long, long time, and I still don’t know exactly why.. But I do feel like, for me, that’s part of the whole addicted to living a lie thing. I think most of us do that at least a little bit. We just swallow it, whatever it is, you put your head down and you keep going. And it’s good enough right? It would be too hard to change it, it would be too uncomfortable to really do anything about it, maybe even feeling like you couldn’t change it if you tried… So you just say, “I’m gonna settle for this..” And I know that might sound sad to you.. or maybe just not the kind of thing that you’d like to hear coming from me. But we’re all working on being really honest. And that’s just the truth. I struggle with it, and if you’re really honest with yourself, maybe you do too. We can easily mistake complacency for stability.
We can think that we’re okay with something and live with it because it’s too hard to see the way out. And last September, I thought I had everything under control. I had a long-term sustainable practice that really did help me keep negative thinking under control, and I had a really busy life that kept me occupied. I’ve got work that fulfills me and gives me an opportunity to feel useful most days. And for me, that seemed like a lot, that was enough. Until, you know, suddenly it wasn’t..
If you’ve been listening along, you know that in October, I lost two people that I cared about very much, in the same week. Both of them, suddenly gone, still young, seemingly healthy, strong, inspiring women. And that shook me.. Mentally for sure, but not just mentally… I was physically shaken, because that’s the way strong emotions usually show up for me. They show up in my body. And shaky is the best word I can use to describe it. Shaky to the point of feeling sick.. and making myself sick really. Again, maybe you don’t want to hear that coming from me, but it’s important. I think you need to know that I feel it too. And it’s not just somewhere way back in my past. It still happens to me sometimes. And because there was a whole bunch of other emotional stuff happening at the same time, I had this sudden, strong fear of death and running out of time… Not just grieving the loss of those two friends but grieving all of the previous losses and the fear of my own mortality… There’s that super famous C.S. Lewis quote that says, “No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.” And that’s not foreign to me, I’ve felt it before.. and not just in relationship to people dying, not just physical losses… it applies to lost relationships and lost time. It applies to all of the lost opportunities and everything that we ever wanted that just never happened. And most of the time we can let that slide… but every once in a while… there’s just no way to ignore it. It just hits too hard. And that’s what happened to me.
There were a few days there at the beginning where I really did curl up in bed and wallow in it a little. And I had to let myself do that to get over the physical part without giving up. And when I did get back up, I had to really look at some things that didn’t feel good. And I hate doing that. And there were a whole bunch of things that went along with that. Like right in the middle of all this, here with you, I had to be okay with taking a break. That is definitely not what I planned. Not perfect. I had to get okay with slowing things down. And that wasn’t the kind of progress I expected. But I had to… I had to do the work on myself, every single day, every week, here along with you. And in the middle of that, the universe just started throwing all kinds of information my way. Random information from the past that changed the way I saw everything was dropping from the sky. And some of that didn’t feel so good either… So I had to redouble my efforts to stay grounded and reimagine my own daily practice and work on showing up here in a really authentic way… And that hasn’t been altogether easy. My life was still busy. The rest of the world didn’t stop for me to figure myself out. And let’s face it, that’s usually how it is.. But the really big point here, and the best news ever, is that you don’t have to give up. I didn’t give up this time. I started working harder. I told you I started working harder physically. Cause I’m not getting younger, right? Because life was feeling really short now, right? So what am I going to do with that feeling? I need to do something… so what can I do to take care of my body and get healthier and feel stronger physically?... I set some physical goals that required daily practice if I really wanted to get stronger. And what about the really hard stuff?... What am I going to do with all the stuff in my head? I will say physical practice does help with that, but I had to work harder, more intentionally, on my mental and emotional game. So I went back to therapy… again.. and I’m still there… feeling all the stuff that doesn’t feel so great, even the stuff from a long time ago that’s been sitting there festering and especially all the new stuff that relates to the past and processing all of that... Knowing that it’s not going to happen all at once. Knowing that if I want progress, I’m going to have to keep working on it. I’m going to have to keep choosing it every day. And I know that I am going to NEED a sustainable method for ongoing practice to make anything happen. And I know that how that looks for me might not be exactly how it looks for you…
It has to be something that you’re willing to do, and it has to be something that you can repeat. We’re back to creating new habits and new patterns, and you’ve already got a whole bunch of ideas here on how you might start doing that. But just like me.. You might have to feel around for other resources and other methods. If what we’re doing here doesn’t totally speak to you, that’s okay with me.. You can take what you learn here and use it for inspiration to go find what does, or to reinforce what you’re learning somewhere else, or to reaffirm what you’re already doing and what you already know.
I don’t really care all that much about the methods you choose to use. I know what’s working for me, and that’s what I share, but that’s not the point of this podcast. The whole point is that YOU have to teach you about you. And you have to find what works best for you. And you have to know that what works might even change over time… Because this isn’t something that you’ll ever be done with… This is just what you do now.. This is how you live. Now you know that it’s your consistent practice that makes the difference.. and how that incites an energetic shift that can be recreated, over and over again, consistently tending that energy that you need to sustain a more positive outlook is what makes what you really want. That’s what makes something new. It’s a very practical kind of magic…. It’s something that goes along with all the laws of nature and how everything that ever existed was made. So, you know, the hard truth is that this isn’t going to bring somebody back to life. It can’t do that. And it might not bring a dying relationship, or a failing career, or situation that’s just too far gone back to life either. But it can bring you back to life! It can change the way you see things. It might change what you want. It might change absolutely everything, and that can take time, and it can be uncomfortable, maybe even painful, and it might even be really scary at first. But there’s a saying, I don’t even know who said it or where it comes from right now, but everything you really want is on the other side of fear. It’s all on the other side of the discomfort and the waiting. And if you’re like me at all, you never got what you wanted by running about from it or refusing to look at it. We know that the only way out is through,
and this is the way. This is the way through. One day at a time. Everything is a work in progress. You’re a work in progress. So am I.. Every day, there’s something that you can do to be a better version of you. So do it! That’s your job. And if you just keep doing it, do it with clear intentions, and there in the background, while you just keep doing what you do, the universe will conspire to bring you something entirely good. Reminding yourself that whatever you want will probably come in a very practical way. Through your hard work and continued practice. And knowing that most of that really is about changing your mind. And I know that you can do that. I know it might not be easy. I get it, it’s not always easy for me either… it’s not.. but don’t give up. Even if you can’t see how it’s all gonna work out just yet, even if it feels hard …. What you really want is to be really you, no matter how it turns out, and that’s worth any amount of effort for however long it takes. That’s how everything shifts, that’s when everything starts showing up.. in the middle of you being who you were really meant to be, and sustaining that connection with who you really are you find everything you’ve been looking for...
So, before we wrap things up, let’s look at the talking points one more time:
· We started by affirming that we do, in fact, have freewill, even though it might not always feel like it; we do, and that it is something that must be exercised on a regular basis if we want to make any meaningful change.
· You might have to look for motivation at first to help you get started, and you’ll probably have to keep looking for it if you want to create any momentum.
· Knowing that momentum is something that might take a little while to build, but that it can be found in any amount of progress.
· And that really is what we’re looking for, we are just looking for progress, we’re not going to let that idea of what’s perfect or the need to have things exactly the way we want them stand in the way of what’s happening right now.
· Because everything we really want is coming, all of it happening right there in the middle of the process.
· And that the creation of that process depends on you finding something that you’re willing to do every day, creating a sustainable practice that is constantly taking you toward what you really want and who you really are…
And that brings us to this week’s challenge question.
CHALLENGE QUESTION
The question for Perseverance is, “What daily practice or ritual would strengthen my intentions?” And really, we’ve already done this work. It’s what we’ve been working on from the very beginning? Where are you right now? Where do you want to go? What do you want? Who do you want to be? What are you willing to do to get there? What are my intentions, and how can I affirm them not just with my thoughts or my words but with the actions I take every single day? Take the time to think about it, but I really do believe that you already know. Give yourself some credit for all the work you’ve done so far.
