Intro

I can’t say that I’ve ever been through physical trauma. I had a horribly broken leg one time and went into shock but besides having babies that’s the only thing that I can really think of.. A lot of what we’re going to talk about today has to do with feelings of safety and basic human needs so you might assume that’s a physical thing. But I absolutely do believe in mental trauma and I believe that sometimes our safety can feel threatened in ways that can’t be seen from the outside. I think there are a lot of healthy connections that get broken when we’re reliving something so painful over and over again. Hope is about making new connections.

The Hope Study Journal Episode takes a look at some of the indications that can point to the need for connection practice, some of the benefits and a familiar writing exercise.

Here are a few of the most obvious indications that we talked about:

  • Isolation

  • Despair

  • Generalized Lethargy

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

  • Excessive Negative Thoughts

  • Cynicism

  • Pessimism

We also went over some of the benefits that come from working with Hope:

  • Relief

  • Safety

  • Increased Stable Energy

  • Opportunities and Possibilities

  • Optimism and Positivity

  • Community and Fellowship

For Hope most of that has to do with reaching for more and getting connected so that’s what we’ll work on together in the Hope Practice Challenge. The journaling exercise is focused on identifying triggers that might come to the surface just before we fall into those unhealthy behaviors or thought patterns. Listen to the full episode or check out the transcript for more about how to work through the process of identifying specific triggers. You might even want to go back to the Truth Study Journal for more reminders. You can use some of the prompts below for journaling in a less structured way.

Here are a few of those same prompts that we used last time:

  • If there is something that comes up for you on a regular basis see if you can pinpoint the last time it happened and how that felt…

  • Is there a physical sensation that goes along with it?

  • Can you think of anything that helps you recognize this particular thought process or behavior looming before it actually happens?

  • And, how does it start?

Don’t forget the Challenge Question for this week:

  • What helps when you feel hopeless?

  • Or reframe it and ask: What makes you feel hopeful?!

Spend a little bit of time journaling and come back to practice on Thursday!
